Skills Lab Curriculum

Each skills training session will begin with a short didactic presentation, followed by procedural practice with guidance and feedback from faculty and senior residents and conclude with objective procedural competencies completed on each resident by faculty. Some procedural simulators will track resident progress and be available to program directors for their review.

Orientation of New Residents

  • Introduction to Ultrasound
  • Central lines
  • Arterial lines
  • Splinting
  • Peripheral IV insertion
  • Interosseous infusion
  • Blood gas draws
  • Insertion of nasogastric tubes
  • Insertion of foley catheters and straight catheters
  • Orthopaedic residents will complete at least six of the ABOS skills modules

Anesthesia

  • Spinal and epidural insertion
  • Nerve blocks
  • Difficult/fiberoptic airway management   

General Surgery

  • Chest tubes
  • Vascular grafts/anastomosis
  • SAGES - FLS training and practice
  • SAGES - FES training and practice
  • Central lines
  • Cricothyrotomy

Internal Medicine

  • Central lines
  • Rapid response and code scenarios

Orthopaedic Surgery

  • PGY 1 residents will complete many of the 16 ABOS modules
  • Knee arthroscopy and related procedural skills
  • Shoulder arthroscopy and related procedural skills
  • Knee arthroplasty
  • Hip arthroplasty
  • Shoulder arthroplasty
  • Dissections
  • Sawbones
