General Surgery Residency Curriculum

 

Five Year Curriculum:

 
OGME 1

During the first year of this five-year residency, the resident will complete rotations in:

  • General Surgery (four months)
  • Internal Medicine (two months)
  • Emergency Medicine (one month)
  • Pediatric Surgery: Akron Children's Medical Center (one month
  • Surgical Critical Care: Cleveland Clinic (one month)
  • Vascular Surgery (one month)
  • Selectives (two months) which may include:
    • Anesthesia
    • ENT
    • Gastroenterology
    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Radiology
    • Trauma
    • Urology
    • Vascular Surgery
    • Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery
    • Radiology
    • Plastic Surgery

The OGME 1 will spend one half day per week for up to 46 weeks in a clinic or physician office.

 

OGME 2

During this year, the resident is introduced to more in-depth patient management. The resident will manage surgical patients on the floor, make rounds and report to the attending physicians the patients course. They will take more responsibility in surgical procedures. The second year residents take on responsibility in teaching the medical students. During the second year the resident will complete the following rotations:

  • General Surgery (nine months)
  • Vascular Surgery (two months)
  • Trauma/Critical Care: Metro Health Medical Center (one month)

The resident will spend one half day per week in a surgical clinic or faculty office for continuity of care.

 
OGME 3

This year the resident has the ability to rotate at our various affiliate hospitals for specialty rotations. They will rotate as follows:

OGME 4

This is the year that the residents are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge in general and vascular surgery. They are expected to take more responsibility in all aspects of the residency program, including teaching of junior residents and medical students.

Their rotations are:

OGME 5

The final year of the program gives the residents the opportunity to help develop the didactic portion of the program. As chief residents, they will work with the General Surgery Curriculum Committee to develop the didactic curriculum for the academic year. They will take full responsibility for the surgical cases they are assigned.

Their rotations will include:

  • General Surgery (eight months)
  • Vascular Surgery (two months)
  • Electives (two months)

The resident will spend one half day per week in a surgical clinic or faculty office for continuity of care.
