Anesthesiology Residency Program Overview

Anesthesiology Residency Program Overview:

Anesthesia is one of the most exciting and promising fields of medicine today. The practice of anesthesiology has undergone many changes recently including more diversification, which allows anesthesiologists to focus on sub-specialty areas that interest them most. Our residency program offers training in the following areas:

  • Anesthesia for cardiothoracic surgery
  • Critical care
  • Neuro-anesthesia
  • Obstetrics
  • Pain management
  • Pediatrics
  • Regional anesthesia
  • Transplant surgery

South Pointe Hospital is a community-based hospital that features a 40 million dollar state-of-the art surgery center with a 24 bed critical care unit. South Pointe Hospital is a regional branch of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. Cleveland Clinic Main Campus as well as Akron Children's Hospital are sites where specialty rotations occur and provide the greatest exposure to that particular case load.

Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine campus is also a new addition to the site. South Pointe Hospital provides residents and medical students with access to a full service medical library, skills lab and multiple conference rooms for education, meetings and individual study.

The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to education and providing a comprehensive clinical experience. The program will prepare you to deliver the best possible care to adults and pediatric patients in both the surgical suites and critical care areas. Our faculty is knowledgeable in the latest developments in medicine and treatment modalities.

In addition to clinical teaching, educational opportunities include: anesthesia simulator training; weekly didactic lectures; journal clubs; and skills labs. Our residents have an outstanding record of passing the AOBA written and oral examinations. They are also in high demand for clinical and academic positions upon completion of their residency.

We seek residents who are accomplished academically, relish challenges and opportunities, are enthusiastic, and work well as part of a team. We encourage resident participation in scholarly activites and additional fellowship training.
