Four Year Curriculum:
The first year of the program the resident will complete the following rotations:
The second year of residency consists of training emphasizing the basic and fundemental aspects of the management of general and regional anesthesia. Levels of responsibility increase as the resident gains experience. The resident is under direct supervision until both the resident and faculty are confident that they are ready to become more independent. All residents are provided with "companion" phones to help facilitate independence in the operating room while being assured that assistance is just a phone call away.
This is the year that the residents receives the opportunity to experience sub-specialty areas. They will rotate in various affiliated institutions in the Northern Ohio area. At the Cleveland Clinic they will spend two months in the Cardiothoracic Anesthesia area and two months in the SICU. The pediatric anesthesia experience is completed at Akron Children's Medical Center for a three month rotation. Fairview Hospital is the site for the Obstetrical Anesthesia rotation. This is a two month rotation. Pain Management is completed with the Pain Management Center at South Pointe Hopsital.
During this academic year the resident will serve as chief resident. They will be responsible for more complex and difficult anesthetic procedures and must assume complete management of assigned cases. In addition, they will receive additional training in thoracic and vascular surgical cases. During this final year, the resident will be given the opportunity to attend a Practice Management Seminar to gain business knowledge to facilitate their ability to take part in a successful anesthesia practice. They will complete their research project and have the opportunity to take the Anesthesia written and oral boards.
